COLD BODY//WARM EMBRACE

Hot glue, framed photos, glass, 20in x 30in photos, 10in x 6in x 11in sculpture, 2023

COLD BODY//WARM EMBRACE explores the intricate networked structure of fascia within the human body, rendering it in a form that is new and unfamiliar to the viewer. This fascial structure is responsible for our bodies’ limits of movement, with sensitivity nearly as close to that of human skin. The intense sensitivity and intricacy of this structure is responsible for the chronic pain many of us experience on a daily basis. In this work, I translate the flameworking technique of networking to hot glue, creating a surprising object that confuses the viewer's understanding of material. When expecting to encounter a hard, rigid material such as glass, the viewer instead experiences an object with flex, elasticity, and movement. The photos accompanying this work display the piece in embracing my body, acting as a form of adornment. In conjunction with each other, these works act as a way of externalizing an interior system of the body, rendering it in an uncanny fashion to the viewer.
